Ceramic vs Carbon vs Dyed Window Tint: Which Should You Choose?
Every car tint job starts with the same question: which film? The three main options — dyed, carbon and ceramic — all darken your windows, but they perform very differently once you're actually driving in the heat or years down the track. Here's how to pick the right one.
Dyed film — the budget option
Dyed tint uses layers of dye to darken the glass. It's the most affordable option and gives a clean matte-black look, with reasonable glare and privacy benefits. The trade-off is heat rejection — it blocks some, but nowhere near as much as carbon or ceramic — and over several years of sun exposure, cheaper dyed film can start to fade or shift toward a slight purple tinge.
Carbon film — the middle ground
Carbon film uses carbon particles instead of dye, which gives it a deeper, richer black that doesn't fade or discolour over time the way dyed film can. It also blocks noticeably more heat, making a real difference on hot days, without the higher cost of ceramic. For most everyday drivers, carbon is the sweet spot between price and performance.
Ceramic film — the premium option
Ceramic film uses nano-ceramic particles rather than metal or carbon, giving it the highest heat and UV rejection of the three, without any interference with phone signal, GPS or electronic toll tags (something older metallic films could sometimes affect). It's the most expensive option, but it holds up the longest and keeps a car's cabin noticeably cooler in direct sun.
